(Imazon) – In July 2016, SAD detected 539 square kilometers of deforestation in the Amazon, with a cloud cover of 7% of the territory. This represented a decrease of 1% compared to July 2015 when deforestation totaled 542 square kilometers and the cloud cover was 13%.

In July 2016, deforestation occurred in the Amazon (35%), Rondônia (29%), Mato Grosso (21%), Pará (12%) and Acre (3%). The accumulated deforestation in the period of August 2015 July 2016, corresponding to the twelve months of the current calendar of deforestation, totaled 3,579 square kilometers. There was an increase in the accumulated deforestation of 8% over the previous period (August 2014 to July 2015), when deforestation scored 3,322 square kilometers.

Degraded forests in Amazon rainforest totaled 664 square kilometers in July 2016. Compared to July 2015 there has been an increase of 176%, when the forest degradation scored 240 square kilometers.

Forest degradation accumulated in the period of August 2015-July 2016 (excluding June 2016 data*) totaled 6,226 square kilometers. In relation to the previous period (August to July 2013-2014) there was an increase of 185% when the forest degradation added 2,186 square kilometers.

* The data of June 2016 forest degradation are still being analyzed and, therefore, may be underestimated.
